Self esteem is a confusing issue which conquers all and leads to mental illness’ considering it is the antagonist of success. Creeping towards the bedrock of the self esteem spectrum is where a large percent of our human race suffers from lack of success and staying positive about different aspects of their life. Such as their physical appearance, different activities or sports and even their careers. There are careers that have a certain role in society to help you with the negative aspects of your life, such as a psychotherapist. The definition of a psychotherapist or a therapist for short, “A psychotherapist is a person who has been professionally trained to help people deal with stress or other problems.” (Going to a therapist) instead of a teenager listening attentively to their peers as they blather about their personal issues. Mental illness. It is a serious issue which must stop.
One of the most common mental illnesses worldwide is caused by low self esteem. Depression and every other mental illness is not a choice, it is a subject that requires serious attention and care in order to solve as mental illnesses affect the whole human race. “The World Health Organization estimates that 121 million people currently suffer from depression, with 5.8% of men and 9.5% of women experiencing a depressive episode in any given year.” (The Relationship between Suicide and Mental Illness) In today's society, men are seen to have “no feelings” or are deemed mentally stronger than woman. It is indicated by the World Health Organization (WHO) that although through statistics it shows that more women have mental illnesses and lower self esteem than men, men are equally affected by both of these concepts. Men for the most part do not wish to seek for aid. Although many have simply found aid the most prominent problem that needs to be addressed with low self esteem and mental illnesses is that it is not discussed and shared with others. Those suffering from mental illnesses are scared of reaching out to others for help, so they hide their feelings because they feel as though others will judge. Mental illnesses are valid and appear in different levels, but they are all harmful when not treated.
“Not every adult who has ADHD will beat themselves up, but many of us have been scolded so often by society for underperforming that we've learned to scold ourselves. It's foolish and self-destructive, but then we humans specialize in being silly that way." Their studies suggest that stigma influences the self esteem of everyone, especially those have mental illness’. In a 2003 study on the Relationship Between Low Self-Esteem and Psychiatric Diagnosis, it was identified that self esteem and mental illness’ have a vicious and uncontrollable cycle. They feed off of one another, mental illness leads to low self esteem, low self esteem leads to different aspects of life taken from you such as your potential and abilities. With frustration and failure, the mental illness is blamed, restarting the cycle.
For those who suffer from mental illness or low self esteem, it is not their fault. It is not a choice. It is a petrifying issue in today’s society. Stigma; it is a choice and it is fiction. Everyone leads to stigma, but by talking and connecting with each other, stigma will go extinct. By growing to accept and respect others, closing our mouths and opening our ears, there will be no definition of stigma anymore. It will simply not exist.
